MANY REGRET A TATTOO
Exact figures on how many people in the population have tattoos are not available, but it is estimated that between 10 and 20 percent have chosen to get tattooed.
Surprisingly, dermatology clinics report that approximately half of those who have gotten tattoos later regret their decision.
The increased demand for tattoo removal shows that many people wish to remove or cover up their tattoos.
How to work out with a new tattoo?
WHAT IS ACTUALLY A COVER-UP TATTOO?
The term "cover-up" suggests that the new tattoo is done on top of the old one to cover it up. This can be somewhat misleading, as the process actually involves injecting the ink from the new tattoo into the same layer of skin as the old one.
This results in a blending of pigments from both tattoos, and new and different colors can emerge.
Because of this, dark pigments will often dominate, and therefore, many tattoo artists recommend using black when doing a cover-up.
Black can be effectively used to cover almost any previous tattoo.
The tattoo artist will work on creating a design that best covers the old tattoo, while also creating a new tattoo that you will be satisfied with.
The ultimate goal is to create artwork that harmonizes with your body and gives you the desired result.
WHAT TATTOOS CAN BE COVERED UP?
In general, all tattoos can be covered up, but the challenge lies in what you currently have and what you want as a cover-up. Send us your request....so we can take a look at it. Then, we can schedule a consultation with one of our artists.
3 THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT A COVER-UP
- Do thorough research.
Before starting the cover-up process, it’s important to take time to think about what you truly want. Many people considering a cover-up often begin by searching for existing cover-up tattoos online. While this can provide inspiration, it might also limit your imagination and may not lead you to what you really desire. Instead, try to imagine that the tattoo you want to cover isn’t there. Don’t let the existing design or size restrict your vision of what you dream of. Remember, it’s the tattoo artist’s job to help bring your ideas to life, so be open to their suggestions and creative solutions.
- Is it physically possible to achieve what you want?
While it’s theoretically possible to cover most tattoos, it’s important to understand that there are physical and technical limitations related to size, color, and design. If you have a large, dark tattoo, it may be challenging to cover it with a small, light-colored design. Factors like color intensity, level of detail, and placement play a significant role in how well the cover-up tattoo will turn out. Have realistic expectations and be prepared for the tattoo artist to adjust the design to achieve the best result. Being open to the artist’s creative input and approach is crucial for a successful outcome.
- Choose the right tattoo artist for the job.
The choice of a tattoo artist is perhaps the most important factor in achieving a successful cover up. Experience and specialization in cover-up tattoos are crucial to achieving the result you desire. Many clients have spent a long time finding a tattoo artist with the right skills and experience to help them with a cover up. Although a tattoo artist without experience may offer a simple solution, it is not always the best option.
We have seen clients who have tried up to 4-5 times without success, which can limit the possibilities of getting a good cover-up. Therefore, it is important to choose a tattoo artist with documented experience in cover-ups and who can guide you through the process to ensure you get a result you will be happy with.
IS ALL HOPE LOST?
If it turns out that your desired cover-up design isn’t physically possible due to size, color, or other factors, there’s no reason to lose hope. Laser removal could be a solution for you.
Laser removal helps to eliminate or lighten the existing tattoo before moving forward with a cover-up. The process reduces the ink in the tattoo, making it easier to apply a new design over it. This way, the skin is better prepared for a more successful cover-up tattoo.
Be prepared for multiple sessions, depending on how much ink needs to be removed. It’s typically recommended to wait 6–12 weeks between treatments to allow the skin to heal and to achieve the best possible results over time.
Keep in mind that laser removal can be expensive, and the cost will vary depending on the number of sessions required and the time needed to remove the tattoo.

ARE YOU CONSIDERING A COVER-UP?
Now that you have a better understanding of the process and may be ready to take the next step, it’s time to start gathering inspiration for the design you want. Search for images that represent the style and motifs you like, but remember to consider what is physically possible based on your existing tattoo. This will help you and your tattoo artist find the best solution for a successful cover-up.
